Ruins Preservation Workshop
Cornerstones Community Partnerships is joining with The University of Arizona's Drachman Institute and Preservation Studies Program of the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Vanishing Treasures Program of the National Park Service, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument to offer two field sessions to stabilize and preserve historic structures at the Bates Well Ranch in Organ Pipe Cactus NM, near Ajo, Arizona.
These two workshops offer hands on experience documenting and assessing structures, and preparing scopes of work for planning and compliance purposes. The hands on work is focused on timber and vernacular wooden structure stabilization involving dutchman type repairs, bracing structures, temporary shoring, limited replacement of wood materials "in kind," and diverse methods used to provide reversible compatible treatments which are both in compliance with the Secretary of Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation and the Guidelines for the Preservation and Maintenance of Vanishing Treasures Resources.
Winter workshop: January 4-8, 2010
The winter workshop is focused on preservation project planning skills including building assessment, developing scopes of work, materials specification, and budget development. In addition, one historic structure will be stabilized based on the specifications prescribed during the workshop.
Spring workshop: March 8-12, 2010
The spring workshop is focused on the stabilization of historic structures based on the specifications prescribed during the winter workshop.
Both workshops will be conducted in a field school format working collaboratively to develop and apply practical preservation skills and are targeted to university students and National Park Service staff. There is no charge for the workshops and all transportation, accommodation, and food costs will be covered for early registrants. Attendance is limited to 8 participants for each workshop.
Please contact Allison Kennedy, Project Coordinator with the Drachman Institute at (520) 626-3811 or
kennedya@ email.arizona.edu for further information and to register for the workshop.

Two Projects receive Major National Funding Awards!
For the Pueblo of Isleta, Cornerstones secured a major financial award from Save America Treasures, the most significant federal grant source for the protection of America's threatened cultural resources. The funds awarded are earmarked for restoration of St. Augustine Church at Isleta, considered to be New Mexico's oldest mission building in continuous use. This is the nation's most competitive preservation grant program and Isleta is one of only six projects to be funded west of the Mississippi this year.
A generous grant from the Getty Foundation awarded to the Pueblo of Acoma will allow it and Cornerstones to implement the return of the traditional earth roof to the nave of San Esteban del Rey Mission. This will be the first time a traditional Spanish Colonial earthen roof is restored to a Spanish Colonial mission in the United States.
